Sail Brisbane 2002 - Sail Brisbane - Optimists Rule as Strong Winds Force Re-think |
BRISBANE, QLD, AUSTRALIA-(4-12-2002) Strong winds have played havoc with Sail Brisbane, today's three heats being postponed and the schedule for Thursday and Friday hastily amended to allow as much sailing as possible for the ISAF Grade 3 regatta.
Whilst the strong winds coupled with opposing tide created a short sharp swell outside on Waterloo Bay, Manly Boat Harbour came alive as four Optimist dinghies normally used by the RQYS Sailing School for training beginners to the sport became the play-toys of Olympic Champions and other highly credentialed sailors, creating a spectacular and exciting new event.
Whilst no one has yet claimed victory in the Optimist class it has provided some magical and memorable moments for sailors to take home from this years regatta.
Racing re-commences tomorrow at midday with four heats scheduled for all classes.
